As I entered the school building this morning I heard talk of a fallen soldier and the fact that his processional to the funeral home would be happening today. Many parents, students, and teachers showed concern and were curious if our students would disturb if they may by chance be having recess or if our pick up line would interfere with the flow of traffic. Our principal reassured us that she did not believe that they would make it to Hartwell before school was released and that we had nothing to worry about as far as us being disrespectful.
But then....... at nearly 2:00, she made an unexpected announcement on the intercom and indicated that within the next 10 minutes the fallen soldier's body would arrive. She suggested we take our students to line the fence of the playground and as we held our American Flags from our classroom. Each and every teacher, student, and parent (those already in the car line) walked to the edge of the fence and joined HCMS and HCHS as we gave our respects to this hero that fought for our freedom and gave his life.
I stood back under the shade of a tree as my precious 8 year olds stood holding onto the fence, peering over with their small little hands on their hearts, in silence. We watched as law enforcement, motorcycles, and the soldier's family surrounded the motorcycle with the glassed in casket of a hero. Tears began to flow from my eyes as it was something I will never forget. I felt honored to be able to share such an unforgettable event with my students and even more proud to know that I am free because of people like MA2 Michael J Brodsky, a 33 year old hero, who gave his life for our country. His family and friends will continue to be in my prayers with the many others who have lost their life and those that are currently serving.
